Once again Cyprus is fighting for its life. The Greek island-home of Aphrodite is confronting its ancient enemies, Turkey and the United Kingdom. This confrontation is taking place in a secret diplomatic meeting in Geneva on 28 June 2017.

Turkey and the UK are former imperial powers that colonized Cyprus for long stretches of time. In 1878, Turkey passed Cyprus to Britain in exchange for British promises to support the Turks in any Russo-Turkish war. The British were not much better rulers than the Turks in Cyprus. Greek Cypriots fought the British and won their freedom.

Turkey's President Erdogan may hold another election to obtain the 330 seats he needs to hold a referendum on the country's constitution.

Until 2002, when the AKP (Justice and Development Party) came to power, Turkey was doing pretty well in following Kemal Atatürk’s dictum: “peace at home, peace abroad”. Admittedly, there were three military coups between 1960 and 1980 to keep Turkey on track, together with ‘a soft coup’ in 1997. But the country was still a respected member of NATO with prospects - however distant - of EU membership.

Today, the People of North Kurdistan (under Turkish Occupation) are paying the ultimate price for the record turnout and votes for the pro-Kurdish HDP in the 7th of June General Elections. The Turkish State is systematically conducting sieges, operations and imposing arbitrary curfews to dozens of Cities and Towns such as Mardin (HDP 73.22 % - 07/06/15) , Diyarbakir- Amed (HDP 77.3%) , Sirnak (HDP 83.89%), Van (HDP 73.79%) and Hakkari (HDP 83.89%) ahead of the 1st of November 're-elections.' Most Towns within these cities such as Cizre, Bismil, Nusaybin, Silvan and Sur had record turnouts for the HDP averaging 90% with the rest of the votes being cast by Military Personnel in the region. These towns are now the epicentre of conflict and massacres.

My note: On a people/culture level we Cypriots love the Americans & Brits. But we really do need allies against Turkish bullying/wickedness. Trojan horses won't do.

The Light Bulb & the Turkish Mentality

The history of the light bulb spans the entire 19th century with Thomas Alva Edison credited for the invention with his 1879 version. "Turkey" 's mentality is old too, like AKP's logo suggests. But unlike the light bulb it has remained the same. True, AKP's Islamofascist version successfully replaced the Kemalofascist version. But raw fascism nevertheless dictates policies. The worst part of the story is that the state has been diligently raising generations that neither see nor are equipped to seek for the alternative. They are preoccupied with saving by force and intimidation their ethnic Turkish state at all costs. The cost to be paid in the end shall be unfathomable! And the end is nigh.

Nothing, however, could be farther from the truth. Turkey's attacks against Kurds have always been intense, even when the PKK declared unilateral ceasefires.

Regarding 2014, when there were no clashes between the Turkish military and the PKK, Faysal Sariyildiz, a Kurdish MP for the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), said, "During the last year, regarding the Kurdish issue, 3,490 people have been taken into custody, 880 people have been arrested and 25 people have been killed with police bullets."

When is not a good time to deal?

Although I shall not expand on it now, the necessary serenity is absent, there is an important reason for which there cannot be, and there should not be, any deal with today's "Turkey" for Cyprus's British-Turkish problem. That is because in "Turkey" there is authentic fascism, some Turkish liberals like Nuray Mert, call it authoritarian nationalism. It's the same thing that persists since its birth in 1923, first under the Kemalist veil that the west approved of, now under a "mildly" Islamic one.

The report, titled The role of teachers in societal peace building - how the Kurdish issue is reflected in schools, exposes the bullying, discrimination and violence that Kurdish students and teachers experience at schools in Turkey, often resulting in life-long traumas.

Not Meddling Back Proves Incompetency Mr President!

"Turkey" meddles in just about everyone else's affairs, more recently Egypt, Syria, Israel, etc. No other country has been meddled more in than Cyprus. I want to see the Cyprus government return the favor by offering Turks advice about their impasse with Kurds. As a matter of fact I demand it. Turks' own ideas in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 00's for balancing the rights of a majority and ethnic minority circa 15% have been plenty. It is time we start reminding Turks of their own ideas and how they could help address their Kurdish conundrum. The right time is now, while their constitutional upgrade is being debated.

Denktash admits Turks initiated Cyprus intercommunal violence

Excerpt from UK TV programme, Britain's Grim Legacy, in which Turkish Cypriot terrorists' leader Rauf Denktash admits that Turks initiated the intercommunal violence between Greek Christians and Muslim Turks on the island in the 1950s. Denktash reveals that Turkish Cypriots planted a bomb to provoke the anti-Greek riots of June 1958. The incident which provoked the riots on 7 June was the explosion of a small bomb outside the Turkish Information Office (part of the Turkish consulate) in Nicosia, alleged to have been thrown from a passing car. Even at the time it was suspected that the Turks had planted the bomb to provoke the riots.
