A comment on Cypriot Refugees

emotional attachment of many Cypriots to their ancestral lands? I have spoken to many children and grandchildren of refugees who regard their ancestors' land as their birthright and who will not give it up on principle. Why should they? Their parents and grandparents land and property is still rightfully theirs under international law and since much of the land and property in occupied Cyprus was seized as part of a systematic policy of ethnic cleansing it is absurd to suggest that the theft of their land should be ‘legalised' as part of any 'solution'. This would create bitterness and resentment and contain the potential for violent instability. The only possible peaceful solution is for maximum restitution of stolen land and the right of return for all refugees. Both Greek and Turkish Cypriot." - James Shawcross.

Adam Smith on Cyprus Bizonality

Adam Smith said: “This is one of those cases in which the imagination is baffled by the facts.” True, he said that a while back. But it applies perfectly in the case of bizonality for Cyprus. I have no doubt Adam Smith would consider bizonality for Cyprus not merely imagination defying the facts, but he would consider it an insult to capitalism itself.

Nowhere in the world are majority land owners, historically the majority land owners, required/ expected to cede administration of their lands (*) to minority land owners of a certain religious or communal background. De jure. Forever. Simply ludicrous. And sadly the idea is of British-American origin.

If Americans can change their mind on Assad, they sure can and must change their idea on bizonality for Cyprus. Else they cancel everything their very nation stands for. They cancel America.

DOWNING Street has been quick to pour cold water on media reports that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is toying with the notion of declaring the Trident nuclear submarine base in the Firth of Clyde a “sovereign base area”, in the event of Scottish voters opting for independence. Effectively, this would mean Faslane and its nuclear stockpile remaining under British sovereignty, controlled by the MoD itself.

Cyprus "bullies" Turkey on the property and energy fronts

Two recent developments illustrate rather convincingly that the Republic of Cyprus against the Republic of Turkey has the potential of developing into a fascinating David Goliath story. On the energy front Europe will get a new burst of energy from Cypriot oil and gas, Israel will get a safe transport path to Europe for its reserves, the USA will secure the drilling contracts, and Turkey seems to have little option but to sit back like a good little girl and watch it all happen. On the property front for the first time since the 1974 illegal invasion of Cyprus by Turkey a Briton is extradited to Cyprus based on a European arrest warrant to face allegations of unlawfully developing and trading in Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied north in a first of its kind case for Cypriot justice. Erdogan's non-recognition of Cyprus bravado talk seems more of a joke with each passing day and even worse Eroglu's defense of Turkey's "rights" in illegally occupied Cyprus the very definition of comedy.
