Northern Cyprus shares features with Syria; resembles 'open-air jail' more than Gaza. In light of Ankara’s recent criticism of what it calls Israel’s “open-air jail” in Gaza, this week, which marks the anniversary of Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus, has special relevance.

‎"Just as it was in the past, if a leaf trembles in the Balkans, the Middle East, the Caucasus or ‎Central Asia, Ankara will be the first to hear it and respond to it,"‎ Turkey's then-Foreign Minister and current Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in a speech in the Turkish parliament on July 1, 2010.

He also declared his stance on ‎Jerusalem:‎ ‎"Jerusalem is our issue. East Jerusalem is part of the state of ‎Palestine, not Israeli territory, and consists of territory that was invaded in 1967."‎

Jerusalem, he added, was a Turkish issue because of its period of Ottoman rule.‎

On July 20, two important incidents were reported by the Turkish Radio and Television ‎Corporation, the country's national public broadcaster.‎

The first report covered how Turkish officials, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, were bashing Israel, the ‎‎"oppressor," for initiating a military operation in Gaza. Of course, there was no mention of this being a response to hundreds of rockets fired into Israel by Hamas.‎ It also did not come as a shock that the broadcast did not utter a single word about Hamas aiming at civilian areas in Israel, rejecting a cease-fire offer that had been accepted by Israel, and using its own people, including children, as ‎human shields. ‎
