Mark Durie*, Melbourne, Australia, December 2015 - Days after the ISIS-inspired terrorist attack in San Bernardino, President Obama’s address to the nation concerning the threat of ISIS missed the mark. In fact, President Obama seemed at times to be more concerned with Americans ostracizing Muslim communities through “suspicion and hate,” than he was with protecting innocent American civilians from murder in the name of radical Islam.

It is high time for western political leaders to stop responding to terrorism by naming Islam as ‘the religion of peace’. It is time to have a hard conversation about Islam.

A s the First General Law of Travel tells us, every nation is its stereotype. Americans are indeed fat and overbearing, Mexicans lazy and pilfering, Germans disciplined and perverted. The Turks, as everyone knows, are insane and deceitful. I say this affectionately. I live in Turkey. On good days, I love Turkey. But I have long since learned that its people are apt to go berserk on you for no reason whatsoever, and you just can’t trust a word they say. As one Turkish friend put it (a man who has spent many years in America, and thus grasps the depth of the cultural chasm), “It’s not that they’re bad. They don’t even know they’re lying.”

He also declared his stance on ‎Jerusalem:‎ ‎"Jerusalem is our issue. East Jerusalem is part of the state of ‎Palestine, not Israeli territory, and consists of territory that was invaded in 1967."‎

Jerusalem, he added, was a Turkish issue because of its period of Ottoman rule.‎

I love this photo (Taksim square, Constantinople, 01.06.2013)! I adore the lady's (in red) stoicism and calmness, in facing fascism. I bet this photo will remain eternal, a reminder for all Turkish liberals and democrats of what they had to endure on their path to true democracy and western freedom. I am also reminded of how upsetting it is to have "Turkey", at its level of maturity, barely grasping the fundamentals of western values, to be preaching Cypriots about how things should be, and the mix of apathy, self-interest, and hypocrisy of so-called Europeans, who have not the courage to stand up for European principles in Cyprus, an island that is an integral part of Europe's soul!

Simple, But Not Simpler!

Everything should be as simple as it can be, said Einstein, but not simpler. For Cypriots it means fixing 1960,

not replacing it. Remove apartheid, foreigners' rights, fascistic divisions, colonial remnants. Restore the historic, cultural and demographic integrity of Cyprus. Safeguard every legal citizen's human rights. Protect those that need (or feel they need) protection. One person, one vote. EU, eurozone member. Europe's energy pillar & diplomacy/education regional center for the promotion of western values in a neighborhood searching for answers to fundamental societal questions.

Simple. But not simpler.
