Since 2014, Yazidis in Iraq have been exposed to genocide at the hands of the Islamic State, which has led to their forced expulsion and exile from their ancestral lands.

ISIS has executed thousands of Yazidis and abducted a myriad others from the Sinjar area, raped them repeatedly and sold them as sex slaves. Nearly 200,000 Yazidis have been displaced in northern Iraq, where the large majority lives in refugee camps.

Forty-two years ago, similar crimes were committed in Cyprus by another occupying army, which is also a NATO member.

In the summer of 1974, the Turkish military invaded Cyprus in a bloody military campaign.

SIR – You described the options for solving the Cyprus problem as “Intractable—or insoluble?” (November 29th). It is neither, unless one is willing to accept that a stronger state can forcefully dismember one of its neighbours; none of the UN resolutions and European Court of Human Rights rulings matter; international rules and regulations do not apply to occupations; civil and human rights are not universal; the Ankara narrative that the Republic of Cyprus does not exist is true; and that Cyprus is Turkey’s vassal state.

DOWNING Street has been quick to pour cold water on media reports that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is toying with the notion of declaring the Trident nuclear submarine base in the Firth of Clyde a “sovereign base area”, in the event of Scottish voters opting for independence. Effectively, this would mean Faslane and its nuclear stockpile remaining under British sovereignty, controlled by the MoD itself.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in his presidential election rally in the southern ‎province of Mersin that Israel will be tried by an international court if it continues to act with its ‎current mentality. "We will see that. As Turkey, we will struggle for that," he added.‎

Ironically, when the European Court of Human Rights convicted Turkey in May of this ‎year for its crimes during the 1974 invasion of Cyprus, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet ‎Davutoglu said that Turkey would ignore the ECHR ruling to pay compensation to the ‎Republic of Cyprus.‎
