Turks' aim indeed was annexation from day one. However, the timing for them to publicly announce it was forced. They would have liked more time to complete their designs. They have painted themselves in a corner. EU entry and energy finds changed everything. I have been saying for over a year now:
Turkish Cypriots have one option alone: forget their 1960 apartheid rights and confidently negotiate their reintegration back to Cyprus (Rep. of) on a 'one person one vote basis'. They constitute a mere 10-12% minority. Regardless what tCypriots choose to do, Cyprus is getting stronger by the day & Turkey's military superiority is of no consequence. The EU will never allow anyone to question her (Cyprus's) energy deposits and alternative energy route. It was reported in the Greek press that even Greece benefited from the Cyprus - Israel - Greece alliance in the making in her recent bailout negotiations. It would be naive to think that Cyprus will not be asking in return from the EU to apply serious pressure on Turkey to allow a fair settlement of the Cyprus dispute. Unfortunately for Turkey she did not have enough time to complete her Cyprus character alteration project! Troops and settlers will soon be buying a one way ticket back home!
